Wedding party from left Ernst Kusch (George's half brother and best man), George O'day, Mathilde (Baumann) Mahrenholz, maid-of-honor and the beautiful bride Mary Frances (Baumann) O'Day.
1924, George met Mary Baumann in Omaha, Nebraska while she was visiting Paula, her oldest sister. George (his birth name Georg Benedikt Odoj) was born February 14, 1904 near Marktredwitz, Germany. Mary Francis Bauman was born March 21, 1900 in a region of Prussia (Oberschlesien, Germany) and now known as Nysa, Poland.
In a 1992 video taped conversation George talked about meeting Mary when she was in Omaha visiting Paula. In the taped conversation, he talked about his brother Joe falling in love with Mary but, then he won her over and courted her for four (4) years. Another obstacle that he goes on to talk about, was the difficulty in winning over his future mother-in-law Mary (Münzer) Baumann because he was not a doctor or lawyer. He stated, "they were kind-of-stuck-up-bunch, nor was he religious enough as they were devout catholics." George jokingly commented in the video, "you know what got me, when I was courting Ma, I'd come Wednesday's - 'go to church', I'd come Saturday, 'go to church', come Sunday, 'go to church' - we'll I'll tell you, I didn't mind going to church, but when you come see a girl, you don't want to go to church all the time."
